Summary
- Driver of fatal McLaren crash had been stopped by police earlier.
- McLaren split apart, caught fire, killing two people.
- Driver met passenger via Instagram; she flew from Florida.

James Wehr was driving a McLaren that crashed and killed him and 22-year-old Alexis Kramer on Sunday. The Irvine Police Department confirmed that the Newport Beach Police Department had stopped the McLaren earlier that night, issuing only a warning to the driver.
The fatal incident occurred shortly after midnight when Wehr lost control of the 2019 McLaren. The vehicle veered off the road after accelerating from a red light, struck a curb, and collided with a tree, splitting the car apart and igniting a fire.
Contrary to online speculation, police stated that Kramer was a passenger, not the driver, just before the collision. Wehr, known in the car community as a co-founder of South OC Cars and Coffee, had reportedly met Kramer via Instagram and flown her out from Florida.
The investigation into the precise cause of Wehr's loss of control is still underway.
