A serious traffic accident on Saturday night resulted in the death of a 68-year-old St. Augustine woman and left a St. Johns County deputy with critical injuries. The incident occurred at the intersection of State Road 16 and Stratton Boulevard.
The preliminary investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol suggests the woman, driving an SUV, was traveling west on SR-16. She attempted to make a left turn onto SR-16 eastbound, entering the path of the deputy's southbound vehicle on Stratton Boulevard.
Both vehicles collided. The woman's SUV spun and came to rest in the eastbound turn lane of SR-16, while the deputy's car continued across lanes, impacting a stop sign. The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deputy, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained severe injuries.
