Travel insurance saves family after horrific bus crash

A family's holiday in Alanya, Turkey, took a terrifying turn when the bus they were traveling in overturned. Twelve-year-old Greta Williams was critically injured, trapped beneath the vehicle with a fractured sacrum and pelvis. The incident occurred when the bus driver lost control while overtaking another vehicle. The bus flipped several times, narrowly missing a tree and a steep drop before landing on Greta.

Greta's mother, Emma Williams, described the horrific scene as her partner helped free their younger daughter while bystanders rushed to flip the bus. After being freed, Greta was taken to a local hospital, where she underwent scans and remained on a wooden board for 24 hours. Eight days later, she was transported back to the UK via an air ambulance, a service fully covered by their £106 travel insurance policy, which the family noted would have cost €50,000 otherwise.

The family, originally from north Wales, is now focused on Greta's recovery, which is expected to take six months. The accident has deeply affected the children, who are reluctant to travel again. Experts from the Association of British Travel Agents stressed the importance of comprehensive travel insurance, advising holidaymakers to consider coverage beyond just the price, especially for planned activities.
