Family of Four Dies After Eating Watermelon
28 Apr
Summary
- Four family members died within hours of consuming watermelon.
- Doctors are puzzled by the rapid deaths and lack of clear cause.
- Samples of the watermelon have been sent for forensic testing.

A devastating incident unfolded on Sunday when four members of a family in Bhendi Bazaar, Mumbai, died hours after consuming watermelon. The victims, Abdulla Dodakia (44), his wife Nasreen (35), and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (12), experienced severe symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea.
Despite sharing a meal with other relatives earlier, only the four who ate watermelon around 1 am Sunday fell ill. The fatalities began around 10:30 am with Zainab, followed by Nasreen, Ayesha, and finally Abdulla. Doctors at JJ Hospital noted symptoms indicative of severe food poisoning impacting the kidneys.
Medical professionals expressed bewilderment, deeming it "very unlikely" that a stale watermelon could be solely responsible for such swift and fatal consequences. They are exploring the possibility of additives or other unknown factors. Police have registered accidental death cases and are awaiting postmortem and forensic reports from samples of the watermelon.
