Families Sue Camp Mystic After Deadly Flooding Kills 27

In July 2025, a devastating flash flood at Camp Mystic in Kerrville, Texas claimed the lives of 27 people, including six young girls. Now, the families of those victims have filed a lawsuit against the camp, alleging that its leaders were negligent in their response to the impending severe weather.

According to the lawsuit, forecasters had been warning of the flood risk since July 3rd, with a Flood Watch and Flood Advisories issued for the area. However, the camp's leadership allegedly failed to take proactive steps to evacuate the campers, even as the Guadalupe River began to overflow its banks. The suit claims that the youngest campers were kept in low-lying cabins near the river, despite the availability of higher ground nearby.

As the floodwaters rose in the early hours of July 4th, the camp's staff reportedly focused on securing equipment rather than immediately waking and evacuating the children. By the time a broader evacuation was initiated, it was too late, with the lawsuit alleging that doors were "breaking open" and water rushing in. Tragically, the six young girls named in the suit - Virginia "Wynne" Naylor, Jane "Janie" Hunt, Lucy Lee Dillon, Kellyanne Elizabeth Lytal, Hadley Rebecca Hanna, and Virginia Larins Hollis - all perished in the flooding.

The families are seeking justice, arguing that the camp's negligence and disregard for the safety of their children led directly to this devastating loss of life.
