Exploding Power Bank: Aussie Warns of Hidden Dangers

A harrowing incident has underscored the dangers of faulty electronic devices after a young Australian man sustained severe burns from an exploding wireless power bank. The Cygnett MagSafe dual power bank, purchased in December 2023, detonated in July 2024 while he was asleep, causing gruesome injuries to his legs, arms, and hands. He experienced excruciating pain and required extensive medical treatment, including multiple skin grafts, spending two weeks in hospital.

Tragically, the device had been subject to an urgent recall by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission three months after its purchase due to fire hazards. However, the victim remained unaware of this recall. The trauma has had a profound impact, leading to ongoing pain, flashbacks, sleep disturbances, and the inability to work since the incident. He only learned of the recall after his mother reported his injuries.

Now speaking out, the young man is pursuing legal action against both the retailer and the manufacturer, aiming to prevent similar ordeals for others. He urges consumers to be extremely cautious with devices containing lithium batteries. A law firm has highlighted the importance of manufacturers and suppliers improving product removal efforts, emphasizing that profits should never supersede consumer safety, especially when faulty products can cause horrific, avoidable injuries.
