Summary
- Two helicopters collided while landing near Mount Everest's base camp.
- An Indian national died, and two others were injured in the crash.
- The incident occurred in Pheriche, a village on the Everest trekking route.
Two helicopters collided earlier this week while attempting to land in Pheriche, a high-altitude village situated on the Everest trekking route in eastern Nepal. The crash tragically killed one person and left at least two others injured. The incident involved aircraft from private operators Fishtail Air and Air Dynasty.
The deceased has been identified as Vasanth Kumar Balaramaramadu, an Indian national aboard the Fishtail Air helicopter. Shailesh Krishna Patel, a New Zealander, and the Fishtail Air pilot, Rabindra Pradhan, sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital in Kathmandu. Fishtail Air stated its helicopter was involved in a landing crash while transporting rescued individuals from the Everest region.
Air Dynasty confirmed its helicopter, carrying only cargo and its pilot, was not injured. Helicopters serve as the sole means of transport for evacuating sick or exhausted trekkers and guides from Everest, given the absence of roads. Pheriche village is located at 4200 meters above sea level.
