Hillary Dawa Sherpa, an experienced Nepali climbing guide, has been found alive after vanishing for six days on Mount Everest. He was discovered near Base Camp on Thursday morning, May 30, crawling towards safety. Sherpa had gone missing on the upper reaches of the mountain early on May 30, leading to fears he had perished.
He was located by the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, a Nepali team responsible for route setting and waste cleanup on Everest. Pemba Sherpa of 8K Expeditions confirmed Sherpa was found and a helicopter was dispatched to take him to a Kathmandu hospital.
Climber Chris Thrall, who summited Everest with Sherpa on May 29, had expressed grave concern for his missing guide. Thrall recounted Sherpa stopping during their descent on May 30, a point from which he was last seen. Thrall opted to assist a frostbitten climber with depleted oxygen, facing a challenging 11-day round trip due to difficult conditions.
Despite the arduous conditions and the successful summit season recording over a thousand climbers, Sherpa's survival after being lost for six days is a remarkable event. This season has also seen at least five fatalities among climbers on Everest.
