Europe Wildfires Ease, But Greece Burns

Wildfire emergencies across much of western Europe have significantly eased as of Saturday, August 1, 2026. Major fires in France and Spain have ceased their advance, and Portugal has brought its largest wildfire under control. These developments follow a period where widespread blazes forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate their homes and holiday sites, disrupting summer tourism.

Despite the progress in western Europe, the wildfire situation has worsened in Greece. Gale-force winds are driving flames through a seaside resort near Porto Germeno, prompting further evacuations. This marks a dangerous escalation in a region already vulnerable due to dry conditions and high temperatures.

In southwestern France, a vast wildfire affecting 162 square miles of forest west of Bordeaux has been contained within its perimeter. While about 198,000 people have been permitted to return home, the fire is not yet declared 'fixed', with active sectors and buried hot spots persisting. Another French fire also stopped expanding but remained active, keeping some residents from returning.

Europe is experiencing rapid warming, heating at more than twice the global average. This amplified warming, coupled with prolonged drought, makes vegetation highly combustible and contributes to faster, more intense fires. The fires have had devastating environmental impacts, affecting millions of animals in France, and have also destroyed homes in Greece.
