In a tragic event that occurred recently in Indore, an auto rickshaw driver lost his life after being attacked by an elephant. The victim, identified as 49-year-old Vijay alias Laxman Rao Holkar, was attempting to feed the animal jaggery when the incident took place.
The elephant had been brought from Ujjain for a ceremonial function. As its mahout led it through the locality collecting alms, Holkar, in his auto rickshaw, stopped to offer the elephant jaggery. Without provocation, the animal became aggressive, lifting Holkar and throwing him to the ground before stepping on him.
Locals and the mahout attempted to control the elephant, but to no avail. The mahout also sustained injuries in the ensuing chaos. Holkar was rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to his severe injuries later that night. The elephant was subsequently returned to Ujjain while an investigation into the incident is underway.
