9 Oct
Summary
- A cargo plane overshot the runway and flipped onto a busy road.
- Two people on board the aircraft are in stable condition.
- The plane was carrying valuable cargo for Ecuador's Central Bank.

A small cargo plane experienced a harrowing accident on Thursday afternoon at Mariscal Lamar airport in Cuenca, Ecuador. The Cessna 208 aircraft, belonging to Cuencana Airlines, overshot the runway during its landing. It subsequently plummeted off a steep bank, flipping onto a busy highway adjacent to the airport.
Eyewitnesses captured the terrifying scene on video, showing the heavily damaged aircraft with a shattered nose and chipped wing coming to rest on Avenida Hurtado de Mendoza. Fortunately, both individuals aboard the plane, including the pilot, sustained injuries that are described as stable.
The aircraft had departed from Guayaquil and was en route to Cuenca, carrying valuable cargo for Ecuador's Central Bank. Flight data indicated the plane was still traveling at over 100 mph when it touched down, with insufficient runway remaining.
Ecuador's General Directorate of Civil Aviation has initiated an investigation into the crash's cause. The airport briefly suspended operations but has since resumed normal service. This incident follows a similar cargo jet crash in Miami last month.
