Rare Fire Alert Issued for Eastern Washington

National weather officials have issued a rare Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) alert for Eastern Washington, signaling the most severe fire conditions this summer. This alert, reserved for the highest risk of large wildfires, has never before been issued for the state. The PDS covers parts of the Western Columbia Basin and areas around the Snake River, anticipating high temperatures and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour.
These extreme conditions are expected to cause explosive growth in new fires and challenge containment efforts for existing blazes. Firefighters are currently battling 10 large fires that collectively cover about 225,000 acres. In response, the Department of Natural Resources is preparing preventative measures, including potential power shutoffs, and has mobilized resources from across the United States.
The Washington National Guard is also deploying 110 Guardsmen to support firefighting operations. Officials emphasize that the dry landscape is already contributing to rapid fire spread, making the upcoming weekend particularly hazardous.
