25 Nov
Summary
- An e-scooter fire trapped a family, forcing a dangerous escape.
- Firefighters attend an average of 18 e-bike/e-scooter fires monthly.
- London Fire Brigade predicts 200 e-vehicle fires by end of 2025.

A sudden e-scooter fire in Catford, south-east London, forced Jahmell Campbell and his family to flee their home. The blaze, described as sounding like a grenade, quickly engulfed the first-floor flat, requiring Mr. Campbell to jump from a window while his father and grandmother escaped through the back.
The incident is part of a growing trend, with the London Fire Brigade responding to approximately 18 e-bike and e-scooter fires each month. Firefighters anticipate attending around 200 such incidents across the city by the close of 2025. This alarming frequency includes two fatal fires this year alone.
Amidst safety campaign efforts, the brigade highlights the risks associated with unregulated e-vehicle sales, particularly online. While high street retailers often ensure products meet safety standards, the public is urged to be cautious. Mr. Campbell has vowed never to use an e-scooter again.
