Teen's 40-MPH E-Bike Crash: A Growing Epidemic
15 Feb
Summary
- Minors show fastest growth in e-bike injuries.
- E-bike crashes disproportionately affect 10-15 year olds.
- Hospitals report severe injuries resembling motorcycle wrecks.

The freedom offered by e-bikes has come with a steep price for young riders in the Bay Area, as incidents and severe injuries surge. Since 2022, minors have experienced the most rapid increase in e-bike-related injuries. Data from Marin County indicates that children aged 10-15 are over five times more likely to be involved in an e-bike crash compared to other age groups. Trauma surgeons are noting a significant rise in e-bike injuries, with severity often mirroring that of motorcycle accidents.
California classifies e-bikes into three categories, but distinguishing them can be difficult for the public, leading to confusion and dangerous situations. Many powerful e-bikes, sometimes referred to as 'e-motos,' are capable of speeds exceeding legal limits and can be modified to go even faster. This has prompted lawsuits against manufacturers and has made it challenging for law enforcement to categorize crashes accurately. Some areas are attempting to address the crisis through local ordinances, such as Marin County's trial ban on Class 2 e-bikes for those under 16, while acknowledging the problem may extend beyond legally defined e-bikes.
