Joshua Alvarado, 30, was arraigned on Friday, February 28, 2026, on charges of assault and driving while impaired by drugs after allegedly striking a school crossing guard. The incident occurred Thursday morning on Sunrise Highway in Merrick when Alvarado, driving a Toyota pickup truck, reportedly lost control and drove onto the curb, hitting John Miro, 70.
Miro, who had been working as a crossing guard since 2023 after a career as a tugboat operator, suffered critical injuries, including broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a skull fracture, and a brain bleed. He remains in intensive care. Alvarado's attorney stated his client suffers from PTSD and that the incident was a terrible accident.
According to the criminal complaint, Alvarado admitted to taking Xanax, Tramadol, and Clonazepam the night before to sleep. He submitted to a blood test. Alvarado's bail was set at $500,000, and his driver's license has been suspended.
