A distressing search is underway in Vouliagmeni, Greece, for a 34-year-old diver who disappeared Sunday within the notorious underwater cave known as the 'Devil's Well'. The experienced diver and pilot vanished after entering the cave system at Limanakia. His companion raised the alarm after resurfacing alone.
Specialist teams, including elite divers from the Hellenic Coast Guard and speleologists, are battling dangerous conditions. The 'Devil's Well' is a perilous underwater shaft plunging to nearly 98 feet, featuring strong currents and a labyrinth of tight passages and chambers. It has a grim reputation, linked to at least four previous fatalities.
Despite the diver's advanced rebreather equipment, which allows for extended underwater time, intensive efforts on Sunday yielded no sign of him. Search operations have intensified, with specialists probing the hazardous corridors. The site has a history of tragedy, including three Americans who disappeared in 1978 and were only identified decades later.
