RNLI lifeguards Noah Hindley and Matt Pyman have received the prestigious Alison Saunders Award for their heroic actions in a complex sea rescue. In September 2024, the duo saved a swimmer who had gotten into difficulty near Bantham beach in south Devon.
The rescue operation required the lifeguards to enter rough waters, battling eight-to-10ft waves amidst a yellow weather warning for strong winds and heavy rain. The casualty was found clinging to rocks about 300m from where he entered the water.
Their outstanding professionalism and leadership were praised, as they skillfully guided the distressed swimmer to safety. This incident underscored the critical importance of having lifeguards on duty, especially in challenging weather conditions.
In recognition of their courage and skill, Hindley and Pyman were awarded a glass trophy, framed certificates, and £500 each to support their ongoing lifeguard training. They described the rescue as one of their most challenging yet rewarding experiences.
