Delhi Building Fire: 9 Dead in Early Morning Blaze
3 May
Summary
- Nine people perished in a four-storey residential fire.
- An AC blast or short circuit is the suspected cause.
- Iron grilles hindered rescue efforts, trapping residents.

A fire tragically engulfed a four-storey residential building in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar in the early hours of Sunday, resulting in nine fatalities. The blaze, which authorities believe may have been triggered by an AC blast or a short circuit, rapidly spread through flats on the second, third, and fourth floors. Firefighters battled the intense flames for nearly four hours to bring the situation under control.
Rescue operations were significantly challenged by iron grilles and barred windows, which prevented many trapped residents from escaping or being reached by emergency services. Nine bodies were recovered from various locations within the building, with victims found across multiple floors. One injured individual was admitted to the hospital with burn injuries, while several other residents were rescued with minor injuries.
The Chief Minister expressed deep distress over the loss of life and assured that all necessary assistance would be provided to the affected families. Officials from the fire service, police, and disaster management are engaged in relief efforts and are investigating the exact cause of the devastating fire.
