Delhi Courts Fail Fire Safety Checks, Certificates Held
12 Aug
Summary
- Non-functional fire alarms and blocked exits found at Delhi courts.
- Inspections revealed multiple deficiencies in fire safety systems.
- Certificates for Dwarka and Karkardooma court complexes are withheld.

Fire safety clearances for the Dwarka and Karkardooma district court complexes in Delhi have been put on hold due to multiple deficiencies discovered during recent inspections by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS). Officials reported issues such as non-functional fire alarm and firefighting systems, blocked exits, and inadequate smoke-management arrangements at both locations.
At the Dwarka court complex, several shortcomings identified in a March inspection were still unrectified by July. These included encroachments blocking access roads, missing door closers, damaged fire doors, and alterations obstructing alternate exits. Consequently, the DFS stated in a July 31, 2026 letter that renewal of the fire safety certificate could not be considered.
Similarly, the Karkardooma court complex also failed its fire safety audit on July 18. Deficiencies noted across several blocks included the need for additional fire-hose reels, obstructed alternate exits, absence of a smoke-management system in the basement, and non-functional fire alarm systems. The DFS has communicated these findings and directed authorities to rectify them before clearance can be granted.
