The research, which analyzed on-road intercept surveys of 844 cyclists, also noted a significant disparity in crash characteristics compared to Western countries. Single-bicycle crashes, common elsewhere, were nearly absent in Delhi. Researchers attribute this to lower cycling speeds and highlight the dominance of motorcycles in urban Indian traffic as a key factor.
The study emphasizes the critical role of infrastructure in cyclist safety. Injury rates per million kilometers cycled in Delhi were found to be 60 to 200 times higher than in nations with extensive cycling infrastructure. This stark contrast points to an urgent need for improved safety interventions tailored to Delhi's specific road conditions.
