17 Nov
Summary
- Landslides hit Java island, Indonesia, since last week
- Death toll rises to 18, over 30 people still missing
- Heavy rainfall triggers landslides in Cilacap and Banjarnegara districts

As of November 17, 2025, a series of deadly landslides have hit Indonesia's Java island, claiming 18 lives and leaving over 30 people missing. The disasters were triggered by heavy rainfall that has been pounding the region.
The first landslide occurred on Thursday in the Cilacap district of Central Java province, burying several locations. Rescue teams have since recovered 16 bodies from the Cilacap area, and seven people remain unaccounted for. Additionally, at least 16 houses were damaged in the incident.
Two more landslides struck a village in the Banjarnegara district of Central Java on Saturday and Sunday, resulting in the deaths of two people. Authorities report that at least 27 individuals are still missing in Banjarnegara.
The national disaster mitigation agency has designated an area for the construction of temporary housing to accommodate the affected families, with nearly 300 households expected to be relocated. Searching for the missing victims remains a top priority, and the efforts will continue in consultation with the victims' families.
The national weather service has also warned that more heavy rain is expected across several regions in the coming weeks. The annual monsoon season, typically between November and April, often brings landslides, flash floods, and water-borne diseases to Indonesia. Climate change has exacerbated these weather patterns, leading to heavier rainfall, flash flooding, and stronger wind gusts.
