A former Yolo County Sheriff's lieutenant is among five individuals charged with murder in connection with a catastrophic fireworks warehouse explosion that claimed seven lives. The blast, which occurred near Esparto, also injured two other people and shook the small farming community.
Authorities stated that the warehouse, owned by Samuel Machado, who was a lieutenant at the time, stored an estimated one million pounds of fireworks. This quantity vastly exceeded legal allowances and was part of a conspiracy involving illegal explosives.
Other defendants include Kenneth Chee, owner of Devastating Pyrotechnics, Jack Lee, the company's operations manager, and Gary Chan Jr., associated with the company's federal license. Douglas Tollefson faces murder charges but has not been apprehended.
The case involves numerous charges beyond murder, including conspiracy, illegal weapons possession, insurance fraud, child endangerment, and animal cruelty, with a total of eight people facing 30 charges. The incident's severity led to the cancellation of local Fourth of July festivities.
