- The bridge was closed in May 2022 due to safety concerns.
- A temporary walkway has been removed by a crane.

The demolition of the original Darley Abbey Mills Bridge has commenced, marking a significant advancement in the safety project. This historic bridge had been closed since May 2022 due to critical safety concerns and was identified as being at high risk of collapse.
To facilitate access and ensure safety during the initial stages, a temporary metal footbridge, known as Walter's Walkway, was installed. This temporary structure was successfully lifted and removed by a large crane on Thursday, clearing the way for the next critical phase of demolition.
Derby City Council has reinforced a public safety warning, strongly advising against any attempts to cross the fragile, structurally compromised original bridge. They stressed that such actions pose a severe and immediate risk to life. The council also cautioned against using the river underneath, particularly during warmer weather, urging responsible behavior.
Security measures remain in place, with teams present on-site 24/7. The area surrounding the bridge continues to be securely fenced and actively patrolled to prevent unauthorized access and ensure public safety throughout the demolition process.
