Cyclone Phailin has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, currently located approximately 800 km from Paradip, Odisha. It is projected to make landfall on Saturday, October 12th, impacting the coastal regions of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has classified it as a 'very severe' cyclonic storm, originating over the east central Bay of Bengal.
Maximum sustained wind speeds are expected to reach 175-185 kmph, particularly along the north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast. Coastal Odisha anticipates heavy to extremely heavy rainfall starting Saturday morning, extending to interior Odisha and coastal West Bengal from Sunday. Andhra Pradesh's north coast will also experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from Saturday.
The storm surge, estimated at 1.5-2.0 meters, is expected to inundate low-lying areas in specific districts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Significant damage is anticipated for temporary houses and agricultural crops. Power and communication lines may face partial disruption, alongside minor impacts on rail and road traffic due to flying debris.
