Odisha Evacuates Ahead of Cyclone Murasu
2 Nov
Summary
- Evacuations underway in southern Odisha for potential cyclone Murasu.
- Cyclone Murasu expected to make landfall on Andhra Pradesh coast.
- Southern Odisha districts on high alert due to saturated soil from Arnab.
Odisha has initiated evacuation procedures in southern districts anticipating the severe cyclonic storm Murasu. This proactive measure follows the recent devastation caused by Cyclone Arnab. The state government aims to complete relocating residents from low-lying and landslide-prone areas by Monday evening.
Districts such as Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Rayagada are on high alert. These regions experienced significant rainfall from Cyclone Arnab, leaving the soil saturated and increasing the risk of further landslides. Authorities are focusing on moving people from identified vulnerable locations to safer shelters.
According to the India Meteorological Department, Cyclone Murasu is projected to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by Monday morning. It is expected to make landfall on the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur by early Tuesday, with wind speeds potentially reaching 100-110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in the southern Odisha districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. While wind speeds along the Odisha coast are expected to be between 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, heavy rainfall may persist for three days. Disaster response teams are on standby, and fishermen have been warned against venturing into the rough seas.
