A 6.1-magnitude earthquake originating near Cuba caused noticeable shaking across Florida on Monday. The epicenter was located approximately 64.6 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba.
Residents in numerous Florida counties, including Hernando, Pinellas, Polk, and Hillsborough, reported feeling tremors around 2 p.m. The shaking was experienced as far north as Jacksonville and Tallahassee, with the majority of reports coming from the state's southwest coast, stretching from Port Richey to Naples.
Witnesses described various experiences, from feeling couches move to seeing coffee cups vibrate. A university professor noted the shaking lasted about 15 seconds. Importantly, the Tsunami Warning Center has confirmed that this earthquake poses no tsunami threat to the U.S. east coast, Gulf states, or eastern Canada.
