Powerful storms have unleashed unprecedented floods across Greece, with the island of Crete bearing the brunt of the devastation. Since Wednesday night, severe weather conditions have caused widespread destruction, including flooded homes and a collapsed bridge in the Mylopotamos province. Fast-flowing mud and rubble have inundated streets, with one car reportedly "swallowed" by the floods, its occupants hospitalized. Vehicles have even been swept into the sea.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection issued a Red Code for Crete, warning of high flood risks from Wednesday evening through Sunday. This led to an emergency alert urging residents and tourists to avoid high-risk areas. Schools in Chania and Rethymno have been closed due to torrential rains and thunderstorms.
Beyond the immediate flood damage, the storms have caused widespread power outages, plunging parts of the island into darkness. Ferry services from Rafina and Lavrio ports were shut down. The army, police, and Greek coastal guard have been placed on high alert as the national weather service forecasts storms to persist through Sunday morning, with gusts potentially reaching 56mph in southern Greece.
