A devastating house fire in Crete, a far south suburb, resulted in the deaths of four people early Wednesday morning. Fire crews were dispatched just before 1 a.m. to a residence in the 100-block of Chalet Court, where they found a one-story home engulfed in flames. Despite efforts from multiple agencies, a partial roof collapse forced firefighters into a defensive strategy. The fire was brought under control within approximately 40 minutes. Tragically, upon entering the home once conditions improved, fire crews discovered four deceased individuals.
The victims have been identified as 71-year-old Walter Palmer and three young children, his granddaughters. Relatives confirmed that Palmer had taken custody of the girls after their mother passed away. Neighbors described Palmer as a friendly and helpful man who shared a beautiful relationship with his granddaughters. The Will County Coroner's Office, Crete police, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause of the fire. The local school district is providing increased support to students and staff grieving this immense loss.
