Speeding Drivers Plague Cowling: Cameras Denied
4 Aug
Summary
- Thousands of drivers exceeded 30mph on Cowling's main road daily.
- 380 drivers were recorded at over 50mph in a single day.
- Cameras denied due to insufficient road deaths, despite injuries.

The village of Cowling faces a persistent problem with speeding supercars racing through its main road at night. Local volunteers have documented the issue extensively, recording thousands of vehicles exceeding the 30mph limit daily, with a startling 380 drivers clocked at over 50mph in just one day.
Despite this evidence and reported injuries, North Yorkshire Council has refused requests for fixed speed cameras. Councillor Carolyn Zeyrek expressed frustration, stating that action is expected only after fatalities, not serious injuries. The lack of night-time enforcement by mobile camera vans exacerbates the problem, as this is when the speeding typically occurs.
More than 100 parish councils are now supporting the call for permanent speed cameras. The elected mayor for York and North Yorkshire has also voiced discontent. North Yorkshire Council is reviewing speed survey findings and collaborating with the police. A trial of a fixed camera in Sherburn was previously abandoned due to vandalism on its first day. However, £2 million has been allocated over the next four years for the county's first fixed and average speed cameras.
