Two new wildfires ignited on Sunday in Colorado's high country, south and southeast of Steamboat Springs. Mandatory evacuation orders were swiftly implemented for a fire located south of Stagecoach State Park.
Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue reported a wildfire on Rabbit Ears Pass, visible from the city. This fire is situated on U.S. Forest Service land and covers roughly 7 acres. The cause of this emerging incident has not yet been determined.
Separately, a second fire started south of Stagecoach State Park. Routt County issued an initial pre-evacuation notice that was rapidly escalated to a mandatory evacuation for areas east of the fire. Residents were urged to leave immediately. Pre-evacuation notices also extended to areas north towards Stagecoach Reservoir.
This region has been under Stage 1 fire restrictions since June 19, affecting the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland. The causes for both emerging fires remain under investigation.
