A van carrying members of the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers 12AA girls hockey team was involved in a fatal collision with a Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow on Interstate 70. The incident occurred about 60 miles west of Denver when the snowplow driver reportedly lost control and crossed the median.
The plow struck a Toyota Tacoma and then the van, sending it down an embankment. The van's driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Eight of the nine passengers in the van were injured.
Four juveniles were taken to a hospital by ambulance and subsequently released. Three adults are currently hospitalized, with one listed in serious condition. A fifth juvenile was airlifted to a trauma center and remains in critical condition.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the hockey community, with the Los Angeles Kings and UCLA Ice Hockey organization expressing their condolences and support for the affected families and the Lady Flyers organization.
