Stars Unite for Colombia Quake Relief Efforts

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia's Chocó province on August 10, leading to significant devastation and an outpouring of international support. Celebrities such as Marc Anthony and Chayanne joined forces for the "Unidos por Los Nuestros" benefit concert, channeling proceeds from donations and ticket sales to aid victims through established nonprofit groups. This initiative, initially planned for Venezuela, was redirected to also support Colombia's earthquake-affected residents.

Colombian superstar Shakira has made a substantial commitment to aid her homeland. Visiting the hard-hit Quibdó area, she announced her Fundación Pies Descalzos will fund the construction of 10 new schools in Chocó. Shakira emphasized that rebuilding schools is crucial for children's futures, stating, "Every day that children don't go to school is a day they miss out on their future." Her foundation has already raised $1.25 million for this rebuilding process, vowing to support the Chocó region until normalcy returns.

The earthquake resulted in hundreds of fatalities, thousands of injuries, and extensive infrastructural damage across western Colombian cities including Pereira, Cali, and Manizales. Shakira expressed profound empathy for the victims, particularly parents who lost children, offering her heart and a promise that their pain will not be forgotten.
