Officer Miguel Cano, 34, died on July 2 after a single-car crash in Culver City. While on duty and transporting a suspect arrested for DUI, Cano reported feeling unwell before losing consciousness and crashing his patrol car. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner confirmed that fentanyl was present in his system at the time of death. First responders administered Narcan, an overdose reversal drug, at the scene.
The autopsy report listed Officer Cano's death as accidental, attributing it to the effects of fentanyl. He had been with the CHP for two years and was married. The suspect in the vehicle suffered minor injuries, as did another officer present. A firearm and suspected cocaine were found in the suspect's vehicle.
