Chippenham: Still Nervous After Devastating Floods

Chippenham residents and business owners are still on edge a year after severe flooding inundated the town centre. The River Avon overflowed in November 2024, marking the worst flood event in 50 years. Businesses, including a barbershop and a charity, suffered extensive damage, necessitating months of rebuilding and significant fundraising efforts.

Despite these efforts, the fear of recurrence is palpable. Local enterprises have implemented preventative measures like sandbags in anticipation of recent storms. The town's aging floodgate, a crucial piece of infrastructure, has also been a cause for concern and is slated for upgrades.

The Environment Agency acknowledges the town's vulnerability and plans to implement additional measures to enhance floodgate reliability. These include debris management and improved emergency procedures. While these improvements are planned, the community's anxiety persists with every sign of inclement weather.
