China's Extreme Weather Training: Ride a Typhoon!
20 Jul
Summary
- Disaster centers simulate typhoons with 165 kph winds and torrential rain.
- Participants experience flash floods with 900 tons of surging water.
- Over 160,000 people have attended disaster simulations since May 2025.

As China grapples with increasingly unpredictable and severe weather events, a new disaster simulation training center in Hangzhou is offering hands-on experience with extreme conditions. Participants can endure simulated typhoon winds up to 165 kph and torrential rain, or experience flash floods created with 900 metric tons of surging water in mock urban and natural environments.
These training sessions, costing 1,599 yuan per day, aim to boost public awareness and preparedness for climate change-related disasters. Since its opening in May 2025, the Lvxing Disaster Simulation Training Center has hosted over 160,000 attendees. The center plans to expand with five more facilities across China within three years, incorporating simulations for other hazards like fires and earthquakes.
