Chemical Tank Crisis Averted: Evacuations Shrink
26 May
Summary
- Worst-case chemical explosion scenario has been avoided.
- Evacuation orders reduced from 50,000 to 16,000 people.
- A criminal probe is underway into the chemical tank incident.

Officials announced that the most catastrophic scenario involving a chemical tank failure in Garden Grove, California, has been averted. The intense threat of a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE) has been eliminated as the temperature within the 34,000-gallon tank, containing methyl methacrylate, has decreased, causing the chemical to solidify.
As a result of the mitigated threat, evacuation orders have been reduced to approximately 16,000 people, a significant decrease from the 50,000 initially ordered to leave the affected areas. The tank is located at a GKN Aerospace facility, a manufacturer of aircraft components. California's Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County.
Despite the averted explosion, a criminal probe has been launched by the Orange County District Attorney into the incident at GKN Aerospace. The investigation aims to determine the cause of the toxic failure and ensure the company preserves all relevant records. GKN Aerospace is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing efforts to resolve the situation safely.
