Warming Shelters Activate as Ice Storm Hits Carolinas

With a significant ice storm forecast for the Carolinas, counties across North Carolina and South Carolina are establishing warming shelters. These facilities aim to offer a safe haven for residents in need as the severe weather approaches. Mecklenburg County has designated specific shelters for men and for women and families, both with increased capacity. The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is providing transportation to these locations, allowing residents to simply inform bus drivers of their destination.
Several other counties are also preparing to open their doors. Ashe County will have a temporary emergency shelter available starting Saturday morning. Catawba County residents can find information through The Salvation Army of Greater Hickory or at the First United Methodist Church of Newton. In Statesville, officials are coordinating with the local Salvation Army. Gaston County's Unity Baptist Church will operate as a warming center from Friday night through Tuesday morning. Rowan County's warming station, managed by Rowan Helping Ministries, is set to operate nightly from January 24th to January 31st.
