A tragic bus accident on Cape Verde's Fogo Island on Saturday resulted in the deaths of at least 25 people, with a significant number of victims being children and teenagers. The bus, carrying 32 passengers, veered off the road and fell into a deep ravine.
This incident occurred on the return journey from an excursion to the Cha das Caldeiras village, located inside the Pico do Fogo volcanic crater. The driver of the bus, who had a tradition of organizing this annual trip as a gift for his students, was among those who died.
Emergency personnel were engaged in rescue operations throughout the night, working to extricate victims from the difficult-to-reach wreckage in the rocky valley. Seven individuals were buried early on Sunday, with the remainder scheduled for burial later that day.
