250-Year-Old Canal Culvert Damage Shuts Road

Cannock Road in Penkridge, Staffordshire, was closed on New Year's Day as a precautionary measure due to damage affecting a section of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. The Canal and River Trust identified damage to a channel designed to manage excess water around Lock 38.
This critical channel, estimated to be around 250 years old and possibly part of the original James Brindley canal construction, passes beneath the old lock cottage and Cannock Road. Consequently, the Trust requested Staffordshire County Council to close the road for public safety.
While initial assessments indicated no visible damage to the road surface itself, engineers from the Canal and River Trust were scheduled to conduct further detailed inspections. The closure remained in effect pending the outcome of these assessments.
