Ten years ago, a devastating incident claimed the lives of five family members in Buncrana, Co. Donegal. Louise James lost her partner, Sean McGrotty, their two sons, Mark and Evan, her mother, Ruth, and her sister, Jodie, when their SUV slid off a slipway and sank. The only survivor was their four-month-old daughter, Rioghnach-Ann.
Recently, hundreds gathered in Buncrana for a memorial walk to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the tragedy. Participants, many wearing red and white, observed a minute's silence and heard a moving performance of 'Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher.' Ms. James expressed feeling overwhelmed by the community's support, noting the event was filled with laughter and fond remembrance.
The inquest in 2017 revealed the vehicle lost grip on a thick layer of algae on the slipway, which lacked warning signs. The gate controlling access for a summer ferry service was also left open. Ms. James shared that she and Rioghnach frequently visit the pier to remember their loved ones, finding peace in the shoreline walk and the play park where her sons once played.
Donations collected during the walk benefited the RNLI, with the event concluding at the Lough Swilly RNLI lifeboat station. Ms. James highlighted the widespread support from across Ireland, including Derry, Donegal, Cork, and Wicklow, emphasizing the community's solidarity and their commitment to supporting the RNLI's vital work.
