- Victim celebrated graduation after a lengthy hospital recovery.

A profound display of resilience unfolded as a 17-year-old Buffalo resident recently attended his high school graduation, a year after a life-altering collision. The incident, which happened around 8:16 a.m. on October 2, 2024, involved a City of Buffalo garbage truck.
The truck driver, Sasiya M. Davis-Johnson, reversed down a one-way street near Rhode Island Street and 14th Street. The vehicle struck the then-17-year-old pedestrian as he crossed the street, inflicting severe injuries that led to the amputation of his left leg and a prolonged hospitalization.
Davis-Johnson has since been sentenced to three years of probation and had her New York driver's license revoked for the duration of her sentence. She pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and reckless driving charges. This plea agreement was reached with the victim's consent. The driver is no longer employed by the City of Buffalo's Department of Public Works.
Despite months of surgeries and recovery, the young graduate recently left the hospital to celebrate with his peers. He addressed his classmates from a wheelchair, sharing a powerful message of perseverance: "It's been a tough road, but with the support of family I made it through. If I can do it, anyone can do it."
