A significant fire erupted at the historic South Bushwick Reformed Church in Brooklyn on Friday afternoon, causing extensive damage to the landmark building. The fire started just before 1:30 p.m. near Himrod Street and rapidly intensified.
Within minutes of its start, the fire grew from a single alarm to a second-alarm, and then a third-alarm blaze approximately 20 minutes later. The FDNY reported heavy fire within the church structure that extended to surrounding properties.
Nearly 200 fire and EMS personnel responded with 63 units to combat the dangerous inferno. Firefighters have successfully brought the fire under control, though operations continue at the scene. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
