A five-alarm fire tore through a Bronx deli and the five floors above it early Monday, January 5, 2026. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 1365 Findlay Ave. in Claremont Village just before 3:30 a.m., battling heavy flames that quickly spread through the building. The fire was brought under control around 7:12 a.m.
Despite the intensity of the fire, which required the efforts of about 270 first responders, all occupants were evacuated without loss of life. Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed gratitude for the quick response that saved lives and aided displaced residents. However, the fire left one FDNY member and a civilian with minor injuries.
Dozens of residents were displaced by the devastating fire, marking the first multiple-alarm fire of 2026 in New York City. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation by fire marshals.
