Briton's Leg 'Hanging Off' After Thailand Moped Crash
12 Feb
Summary
- British tourist suffers severe leg and facial injuries in Thailand.
- Travel insurance denied due to lack of UK moped license.
- Family fundraising for emergency surgery and repatriation.

A British tourist, Lewis McClelland, 30, is facing extensive medical bills and a difficult recovery in Thailand following a severe moped accident. The collision with a tuk-tuk on Ko Lanta resulted in critical injuries, including a severely damaged leg, fractures to his wrist and fingers, and facial lacerations. He reported his leg was so badly injured that it was "hanging off" and he lost pulse in his foot, narrowly avoiding amputation.
McClelland is now stranded in Thailand as his travel insurance provider has refused to cover his emergency surgery and repatriation costs. The insurer stated he was not covered because he did not possess the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate required in the UK for moped riders, a detail not requested when he hired the vehicle. His mother has initiated a GoFundMe campaign, seeking over £20,000 to cover the estimated £15,000 to £40,000 medical and repatriation expenses, with over £14,450 raised so far.
