On Saturday, November 16th, 2025, a 14-year-old British girl was enjoying her final swim before returning home from a school trip to the Spanish Costa Brava region when tragedy struck. The unnamed teenager was swept out to sea by a powerful wave at around 11:45 am local time in the resort town of Lloret de Mar.
Police were quickly alerted and rushed to the beach, where they saw the girl and another person being carried out into the choppy waters. The officers jumped in and managed to reach the unconscious teenager, but she had already gone into cardiac arrest. Firefighters assisted in the dramatic rescue, using ropes to pull the victims to safety.
After nearly 30 minutes of CPR on the beach, the girl was finally resuscitated and rushed to the intensive care unit at Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona, where she remains in critical condition as of November 18th, 2025. Witnesses praised the swift and coordinated response of the local police, fire brigade, and civil protection workers, whose efforts are credited with saving the young girl's life.
Authorities have opened an investigation into the incident, which is being treated as a tragic accident. The girl was part of a group of London schoolchildren on a study trip to the Costa Brava, and they were set to return home on the same day the near-drowning occurred.
