A tragic diving incident off the coast of Gili Air, Indonesia, has claimed the life of 45-year-old Robert Ladd from Hillingdon, northwest London. Ladd entered the water alone on Tuesday morning, attempting to navigate the dangerous "Indonesian Throughflow" rip currents instead of opting for a boat.
When he failed to resurface after approximately an hour, friends and local dive operators initiated a search. Rescue crews located Ladd's body at a depth of around 12 meters. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead by paramedics.
The incident has led to a stern warning from local authorities. They are emphasizing the critical importance of safety protocols for tourists and divers, advising against diving alone without a companion or professional guide due to the risks posed by strong ocean currents and boat traffic. The British Embassy has been notified.
Family members have expressed their grief on social media, remembering Ladd as a beloved figure within the Manta Dive community. The Gili Islands, known for their pristine diving sites, are also recognized for their potent and unpredictable ocean currents, underscoring the dangers of underestimating the marine environment.
