A devastating outbreak of suspected food poisoning in Pombal, Brazil, resulted in the death of one individual and left 118 others hospitalized. The victims consumed food from a local pizzeria, La Favoritta, on Sunday evening.
Raíssa Maritein Bezerra e Silva, 44, was among those who fell ill, experiencing severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Her condition rapidly deteriorated, and despite intensive care, she passed away on Tuesday morning.
Authorities swiftly responded to the escalating health crisis. The State Health Surveillance Agency (Agevisa) inspected the pizzeria, uncovering critical violations. Inspectors noted appalling temperature conditions, inadequate food storage, rusty equipment, and the presence of insects, concluding the establishment was in complete breach of health regulations.
The pizzeria was subsequently closed by the Pombal Health Authority. The venue's lawyer confirmed cooperation with ongoing inspections and the seizure of materials for analysis. The case is now under investigation by the civil police.
