A devastating tornado ripped through Chapecó, Brazil, causing panic at the local airport as flyers desperately sought shelter. The storm shattered terminal windows, downed power, and scattered debris, forcing the airport to suspend all flights until Friday. Powerful winds of up to 78mph also caused damage in other parts of Chapecó. CCTV footage captured a whirlwind of debris blasting down a street. The Civil Defence indicated the tornado hit Chapecó around 10:30 am on Wednesday. Minutes later, a second tornado struck the neighboring city of Xanxerê, prompting a red alert across Santa Catarina state.
The severe weather event resulted in one fatality in Rio Negrinho. Drones were deployed to assess the damage from what officials described as a 'mesovortex.' This incident follows other recent tornado impacts, including one in Turkey that killed four construction workers and another in Sicily that injured two people.
