In Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district, two Class 10 students displayed immense courage by rescuing a woman from a dangerously strong canal current on Friday. Krishna Gupta and Saddam Hussain, both 16, were near the Saat-Paanch bridge when they saw the woman being swept away in the Deoria Branch Canal.
Despite the visible force of the water, which deterred other onlookers, the two students bravely entered the canal. They reached the struggling woman, kept her above water, and guided her toward the bank. Bystanders then helped pull her to safety.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the woman's entry into the canal, with some reports suggesting a family dispute. The young heroes, Krishna from Sekhui and Saddam from Kohadwal, were lauded for their swift actions.
Superintendent of Police Shakti Mohan Awasthi and District Magistrate Gaurav Singh Sogarwal formally recognized the students with certificates and mementoes. Their bravery is also being considered for the National Bravery Award, and their school has announced plans for a felicitation ceremony.
