6 May
Summary
- A minor was trapped in a forest crevice for seven hours.
- A python was present but did not harm the boy during rescue.
- Specialised teams used a hydraulic jack to free the child.

In an extraordinary rescue operation on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the Odisha fire service successfully extricated a minor boy trapped in a narrow rock crevice. The incident occurred in the Kanipada forest of Nayagarh district when the boy, Sibha Pradhan, got stuck while attempting to collect honey. His head and hand became lodged between two large boulders.
Villagers alerted the local fire stations, but the remote site necessitated a specialized team from Bhubaneswar. The rescue was both unique and technically demanding due to difficult access and the unexpected presence of a python. Director General of Fire Services Sudhanshu Sarangi noted it was fortunate the snake did not harm the child.
After more than seven hours of painstaking effort, the specialized team employed a heavy-duty hydraulic jack to slightly move the boulder, creating enough space to free the boy. Throughout the ordeal, Sibha was kept calm and hydrated. He was subsequently rushed to a hospital, where he was found to be out of danger.
